When I started learning Chinese Brushstroke (or what the Japanese call Sumi), it interested me how none of the subject matter has a light source, how black and white are not extreme hues...but are treated as colors, and how you could take black ink, a little water, and create such depth as shown in this picture. Bamboo painted with green is nice as well, but the contrast is fully accomodated in this simple but contrasting painting. This is one of my personal favorites.
